Total Hip Replacement
In Total Hip Replacement procedure the ball and socket is replaced with a metal ball and stem which is inserted into the femur bone and an artificial plastic cup socket. The artificial joints metalic ball and stem is inserted with bony cement called methylmethacrylate. A cementless prosthesis is also used such that it has microscopic pores that allow bony ingrowths from the normal femur into the prosthesis stem.
Total Hip replacement is done in the patients having:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rhematoid arthritis
- Death of hip bone
- Fractures in the hip joint.
- Severe pain while walking, climbing, changing from sitting position and if it affects the daily activities.
Most commonly the total replacement is done in young patients because it is a long lasting replacement.
Surface Replacement
In surface replacement the procedure is similar to that of traditional hip replacement except in two ways. Instead of removing the head and neck of the femur in traditional replacement the bone is replaced in surface replacement. After the bone is removed in surface replacement it is carved to accept a metal cap with a short stem.
Greater stability of hip joint and the more bone that remains during a revision hip operation, the greater chances of success, are two advantage of surface replacement.
